Terms of Use

All the text and images on this website ("the Website") are protected by internationally recognised laws. The National University of Singapore ("the University") hereby asserts any intellectual property rights that it may have in the Website and to the Materials posted on the Website, including copyright, publication rights, database right and any rights in compilation except where otherwise noted.

The materials found on the Website may not be posted or in any way mirrored on the WWW or any other part of the Internet except at the following publication site: http://darwin-online.org.uk.

Access to, and use of, the Website is provided by the University subject to the following terms and conditions:


the Materials means all or any information, text, images, artwork, text video, audio, animation or picture files contained and comprised in the Website; references to the Materials shall mean the whole or any part thereof;

trademarks shall be deemed to include all logos, shields and service marks.


Permission is hereby granted, without agreement and without licence or royalty fees, to use and to download and print a single copy of the Materials for private study and research, provided that such usage and copying is for non-commercial purposes only and not for any commercial advantage and that any copyright notice within the Materials and proper academic citation via full bibliographical details appear in any copy of the Materials.

To use and copy the Materials otherwise requires specific written permission from the University and the original copyright holder(s) as identified and the User undertakes to contact the University and the copyright holder(s) to obtain permission to do so.

Any further use may infringe copyright and moral rights and may attract civil remedies and criminal penalties. The University regularly monitors access to the Website, other websites and publications in all media and utilizes digital watermarking to assist in the tracing of illegal use and will take action for infringement of copyright and breach of these Terms of Use.

The User warrants to the University that the User will not infringe the University’s intellectual property rights herein nor will the User breach the intellectual property rights of any third party herein.


The trademarks of the University and any third party displayed on the Website are the registered and unregistered trademarks of the same. Nothing contained in the Website shall be taken, construed and/or considered as a grant of a licence or right to use the trademarks displayed on the Website without the prior written permission of the owner.


    In no event shall the University be liable to any party for any of the following losses or damages (whether such losses be foreseen, foreseeable, known or otherwise): loss of data, loss of revenue or anticipated profits, loss of business, loss of opportunity, loss of goodwill or injury to reputation, loss suffered by third parties, any direct, indirect, special, incidental, or consequential loss or damages arising out of the use of these materials whether or not amended by third parties and regardless of form of action.

    The University provides the Materials "as is" without warranty of any kind either express or implied including but not limited to the implied warranties of merchantability and fitness for a particular purpose.


    If any of these Terms of Use should be determined to be illegal, invalid or otherwise unenforceable by reason of the laws of any country in which these Terms of Use are intended to be effective, then to the extent and within that jurisdiction in which that Term of Use is illegal, invalid or unenforceable, it shall be severed and deleted from these Terms of Use and the remaining Terms of Use shall survive and remain in full force and effect and continue to be binding and enforceable.


    The University reserves the right to change the terms, conditions and notices under which the Website is held. The User is responsible for reviewing these Terms of Use, terms, conditions and notices. The User’s viewing and/or use of the Materials constitutes the User’s agreement to all such Terms of Use, terms, conditions and notices.

    The Website may contain links to third party websites ("Linked Sites"). The Linked Sites are not owned or controlled by the University and it is not responsible for the contents of any Linked Site, including without limitation any changes or updates to a Linked Site. The University is not responsible for webcasting or any other transmission received from any Linked Site, nor is the University responsible if the Linked Site is not working properly. The University provides these links to the User only as a convenience, and the inclusion of any link does not imply endorsement of any website or any association with its operators. The User is responsible for viewing and abiding by the privacy, copyright and terms and conditions posted at the Linked Sites.

    If these Terms of Use are not accepted in full, the User does not have permission to access the contents of the Website and therefore should cease using the Website immediately.
